Default Velvet Gloves!

In the 1960s and 1970s women were not treated equally. Indeed, in the film industry women were regularly exploited in order to excite the target audience. There was a great deal of gratuitous violence and sex, and much of it directed at women. Actresses were expected to play roles in which they might be abused or beaten, without argument. This even applied to some big name female stars, especially those whose position as a star had been earned largely because of their sexy roles and there physical appearance.

One such actress was Racquel Welch. She had became an iconic sensation playing the fur bikini clad cavewoman in 1 million years bc for the British Hammer Studio. In that film the directors had made sure that she was made to fight another gorgeous model named Martine Beswick in a fairly gratuitous scene, in which the two beauties tried to beat each other senseless. Producers picked up on just how popular this scene became, and so they used the theme again, more obviously, when Racquel was cast as a brawling roller derby girl in Kansas City Bombers six years later when she was back working for 20th Century Fox.

Seeing Racquel Welch fighting, whether winning or losing, clearly sold tickets, and so she was manipulated into several other fight scenes in her short career.

The high point of this exploitation would have been the film “Velvet Gloves” which was scripted in the aftermath of 1 Million Years BC, when Racquel was 26 years old. After securing finance from a major studio the picture was cast with Racquel Welch playing an ex model female boxer who is forced to fight on the underground circuit to pay off debts to an unscrupulous gang boss. The film began shooting, and according to insiders would have set new standards of realism and gore for a boxing movie, something like the later “Rocky” series of films. However trouble within the studio led to the funding being delayed and finally withdrawn, with the film initially being put on ice for a year. The decision then was not to finish it, and most of the rushes shot to date were destroyed.

There hadn’t been any problems with Racquel, even though she had been subjected to massive punishment during the course of the shooting as a fairly high percentage of punches thrown did actually connect. She was going to be paid a lot of money or so she thought, so when she was being smashed to pulp quite gratuitously by some black pro fighter, she did her best to do what she was told.

The plot would have had her taking several brutal one sided beatings, before she gradually improved and went on to unexpectedly win a showcase underground match against another white woman.

Someone in the industry has collected together all the segments that remain, including scenes from the early fights.

Because the fights were underground, and designed for a male audience, you can imagine that Racquel did not wear regulation boxing gear. She wore ankle boots, short tight fitting shorts with the waist band at the hip, leaving her navel and lower abdomen bare. Up top she wore a cropped cotton top cut away to expose both the tops of her breasts, and a fair amount of the undersides of her breasts. Her boobs just quivered away in the skimpy top, nipples poking out through the thin material. No head guards were worn of course, so that Racquel Welch’s pretty face could be punched freely.

To give you a feel for how the film would have turned out, I will describe one of Racquel’s fights. The most complete is one against a black pro fighter, and the next is one against a tough Mexican girl. Both provide loads of opportunity to watch gratuitous violence being carried out on the still young Racquel Welch.

Which would you most like to read? Against the black girl or the Mexican?

(The above is largely fiction though there may possibly be some truth behind it from what I heard).

Thank you for this post, Raquel Welch is easily the most beatuful woman I have ever seen. I was a boy when she starred in 1 Million Years BC and it probably pushed me into puberty.

Your story, true or not, is awesome! In the late 1960 or early '70's Raquel had a TV special, Like most of its day, it featured singing and dancing and famous guest stars. She had the most famous guest you could land, John Wayne. One of the skits on the show was a dance number in a bar. Raquel gets into a fight over a guy (my favorite senerio) and ends up tossed out of the bar on her sweet little ass. It was played for laughs, but it was the sexiest thing I've ever seen on TV, I'd love to find it on U Tube.

Thanks for the comments guys. So even in her tv show she gets her ass kicked! I realy wish it was a true story and that I could see the film of her in a boxing match against the black woman. Just imagine hearing the sound of the black pro's leather gloves thudding into Racquel Welch's stunning body....the shots to Racquel's face, snapping her head from side to side. Imagine Racquel being thrust against a corner post and the punches curling into her belly, and the short range uppercuts smacking into the undersides of her breasts.......the sounds she'd be making. Then seeing her try to fight back, lithe like a cat, snaking out punches at her opponent. Licking away the blood from her lips. She is fast and skillful, but is caught again by the pure power of her opponent. The black steams into Racquel, hitting her with lefts and rights to the face and body...we watch as Racquel sinks to her knees. Is she out or can she continue?

Oh, she'd be out for sure. But not after a sexy plea to her opponent to stop beating her

Default velvet gloves is true

I read in Kup's column which ran in Chicago in the Chicago Sun Times newspaper. He had a small item about the movie being either considered or filmed, and Susan Clark was mentioned as another actress. She is white for those of you who have not seen Susan and she was from the 70s and was or is married to ex football player Alex Karras. Who killed the film is unknown, but as we know in the 1970s thier was not a lot of acceptance of women boxing except in private gyms or those lucky enough to get thier girlfriends or wives to box other women.

Personally I think Raquel Welch is the sexier and hotter woman all the time. I love her catfight scenes in movies. But over all, I love to fantasies her takes a beating and humiliating from other women. If this film were reality, I think it would be the perfect show. From the two options, I prefer Raquel against the Mexican girl. And I agree the sound of punches on her boobs and the mauling would be magic….
